The conservative wing in the USA has mobilized to pressure Wikipedia to change the way it operates, influencing its content.
In recent times, there appears to be an effort by elements of the Administration Donald Trump on the devaluation of Wikipedia.
In an article published in this Tuesday’s edition of the newspaper, the way in which the US conservative wing has mobilized to identify and pressure Wikipedia editors to change their ‘modus operandi’.
In August, writes the morning newspaper, the House of Representatives Committee on Government Oversight and Reform and its subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology and Innovation launched a formal investigation into attempts to influence content on Wikipedia.
Congressmen accuse the platform of bias when it comes to sensitive content, such as the war in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“There is a fight for the truth on Wikipedia when the content creates divisions. Groups come together and try to make their points of view prevail”, he explained to the same newspaper, Pedro Rodrigues Costaprofessor at Universidade Lusófona and PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Minho.
Extra politics, Elon Musk is among the names that have most criticized Wikipedia. In fact, the platform has been pejoratively named by the tycoon with names like “dickipedia” or “wokipedia”.
In October, the owner of Tesla launched his own version: the Grokipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, which relies on human intervention to write articles, this is generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
One Republican Party figure who attacked Wikipedia was Ted Cruzwhich accuses the platform of having a left-wing or liberal bias. The senator regretted the fact that Wikipedia marked it as “advised” content from the Heritage Foundation.
The Heritage Foundation is a conservative think tank that prepared part of Trump’s government roadmap. As the newspaper Público writes, North American media have reported a organized strategy against Wikipedia by this think tank.
