Alcohol during the holidays can disrupt relationships in families: According to an expert, there is no healthy level!

Under the influence of alcohol, unresolved issues are often opened up in interpersonal relationships, which leads to uncontrollable quarrels and the breakdown of relationships. In families, it can spoil the holidays, especially for children who witness it. This was pointed out by the director of the Center for Drug Addiction Treatment (CPLDZ) Ľubomír Okruhlica. At the same time, experts appeal to the fact that holidays are better enjoyed without alcohol.

“In families under the influence of alcohol, things are opened that are unresolved, and it leads to such uncontrolled arguments many times or to the disruption of those relationships, which then takes a long time or cannot be fixed. It is often in the presence of children who are looking forward to the holidays and this is how they actually get spoiled,” the expert added, adding that this would not have happened without alcohol.

He also pointed out that during the holidays, people are often relieved of stress from work and responsibilities, so they tend to drink more. That is why, according to him, the largest number occurs in this period heart attacks, either heart or brain. However, according to him, you should be careful even with small amounts of alcohol. The risk groups are especially the elderly or the chronically ill.

Okruhlica also warns against drinking among young people during the holidays at various celebrations and discos. “They often get drunk there or some go overboard, and that’s risky. Nowadays, it’s also because many people still combine it with drugs,” he noted.

He clarified that young people do not have to have a sufficiently developed organism, therefore, their tolerance is lower and severe alcohol poisoning can also occur. “They end up in the emergency room, and not to mention injuries and arguments, sometimes fights, these are the risky situations,” added the expert.

Head of the Institute of Drug Addiction Zuzana Kamenda therefore, he recommends knowing how to arm yourself during this period or guarding the amount of alcohol consumed. “Once a person decides to drink alcohol, he can say to himself, that he will only take a certain amount and that he will watch it all evening so that the consequences do not have to be fatal“, she explained.

However, Okruhlica also emphasized that there is no safe level of drinking. “There is no safe amount of alcohol, even if the first drink at a family gathering during the holidays may seem harmless at first glance, the potential risks should not be underestimated.” he added.
