An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit the northeastern coast of Taiwan on Saturday, USGS announced. The authorities in the island country have not yet reported victims or damage, reports TASR according to the AFP news agency.

The earthquake occurred at 23:05 local time (16:05 CET) off the coast of Ilan County, southeast of the capital, Taipei at a depth of 73 kilometers under the seafollows from the data of the Taiwan Meteorological Service, which registers a magnitude of 7.0.
This is the second strong earthquake to hit Taiwan this week. The previous one with a magnitude of 6.0 occurred on Wednesday in the southeast. Local media reported that Saturday’s tremors shook buildings in Taipei and were felt across the island.
Taiwan is often affected by earthquakes because of its location at the interface of two tectonic plates near the so-called of the ring of fire surrounding the base of the Pacific Oceanwhich according to the USGS is the most seismically active zone in the world.
