“We have the conditions… for a just and lasting peace, but that requires a willing Russia,” Carney said. According to him, the Russian attacks on Kyiv last night, which he described as “barbarism”, show how important it is to stand by Ukraine.
Zelensky visited Canada on his way to Sunday’s meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida. He thanked Carney for his support and said the latest overnight attacks are “Russia’s response to our peace efforts and they really show that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin does not want peace”.
In a brief statement to journalists, the Ukrainian leader added that two things are needed to stop war – pressure on Russia and sufficient strong support for Ukraine. According to him, some steps have been taken recently, but further diplomacy is needed.
After the meeting with the Canadian Prime Minister, Zelenskyi will talk to European leaders by phone about the current state of negotiations on the peace plan for Ukraine. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz organized the video call at his request, and according to the European Commission, its president Ursula von der Leyen will participate in it, DPA reported.
