Since taking office in December 2023, the far-right Argentine president has governed with the budget approved for that year, which he then extended twice
The Argentine Parliament approved the Budget for 2026 on Friday, the first since Javier Milei became President in 2023, which foresees GDP growth of 5% and a slowdown in annual inflation to 10.1%.
The Senate approved the project — which had already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies — with 46 votes in favor, 25 against and one abstention, after a long session, which represents the first major achievement of the ultraliberal La Libertad Avanza, Milei’s party, in Congress, after having significantly increased representation in both chambers this month, as a result of the victory in the October legislative elections.
The approved budget foresees a significant slowdown in inflation for 2026 – far from the 117.8% recorded in 2024 and below the 27.9% accumulated until November 2025.
The law projects a primary surplus equivalent to 1.5% of GDP for next year, with increases of 20.6% in expenditure and 20.8% in tax revenue.
During Friday’s session, La Libertad Avanza had the support of center-right formations and deputies aligned with governors of some of the country’s most important provinces.
Milei celebrated the approval of the 2026 Budget with a message on her account on the social network
The far-right President has governed since taking office in December 2023 with the budget approved for that year, which he then extended twice.
The 2023 Budget contains expenditure items stipulated in September 2022, which were completely diluted by the effect of very high accumulated inflation, which gave the government great room for maneuver to maintain the policy of severe fiscal adjustment and manage several budget items according to its criteria.
