Perry Bamonte, guitarist of The Cure, dies at 65 | Culture

Perry Bamonte, guitarist and keyboardist of The Cure, has died at the age of 65, as announced by the band on its website this Friday, December 26, without specifying the date of death. Regarding the cause, he points out: “It happened after battling a short illness during Christmas.” Bamonte planned to perform at the international concerts in 2026.

According to a statement, “calm, intense, intuitive, constant and tremendously creative, Teddy was a warm and vital part of The Cure’s history.” The text continues: “Looking after the band from 1984 to 1989, he became a full member of The Cure in 1990, playing guitar, six-string bass and keyboard on The Wish, Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, acoustic hits and albums by The Cure, in addition to performing more than 400 concerts over 14 years. He rejoined The Cure in 2022, playing another 90 concerts, some of the best in the band’s history, culminating with the concert The Show of a Lost World in London on November 1, 2024. Our deepest condolences to his entire family. “We will miss him very much.”

Born in London in 1960, Bamonte started in music at the age of 19, when playing bass he joined, along with drummer Paul Langwith, the until then guitar duo The Plan, which was formed by Robert Marlow and Vince Clarke (who would later join Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure).

Bamonte joined The Cure as part of their touring team in 1984 through his brother Daryl, who was the manager on tour of the band. Bamonte became personal assistant and guitar technician to the group’s singer and leader, before officially joining The Cure in 1990, following the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell. He left the group in 2005 after Smith reconfigured The Cure as a trio, although the two remained good friends.

Bamonte then dedicated himself to illustration and his passion, fly fishing in rivers. In 2012 he joined the band Love Amongst Ruin, before reuniting with The Cure for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. Bamonte officially rejoined The Cure in 2022 for the world tour. Shows of a Lost World, which started in Latvia in October and continued until December 2023.
