Former director general of the PRF (Federal Highway Police) Silvinei Vasques was arrested this Friday (26) at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, in Asunción, Paraguay, when trying to escape to El Salvador.

Silvinei was sentenced to 24 years and six months in prison by the First Panel of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) for participating in an attempted coup d’état. There is still an appeal, which is why the former director was awaiting freedom.

According to an investigation by the CNNSilvinei traveled from Santa Catarina, where he lives, to Paraguay by car.

In the neighboring country, he tried to board a flight to El Salvador, a country in Central America, with a false Paraguayan passport.

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), ordered Silvinei’s preventive detention this Friday.

According to the decision, the suspected escape began when the Federal Police identified that Silvinei’s electronic ankle bracelet had no GPS and GPRS signal, possibly due to a lack of battery.

As found out by the CNNmust be taken from Asunción to the border with Brazil in Foz do Iguaçu (PR) by the Paraguayan authorities and handed over to the Federal Police.

The PF will take the former director to Brasília, where he will spend the night at the Federal Police Superintendency, the same place where former president Jair Bolsonaro was serving his sentence before being admitted for surgery.
