Five people, including two Czech tourists, died near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. According to information from the Czech website, it was a young couple from České Budějovice. Both graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen and then started working in dentistry.
They set out on Kilimanjaro as experienced travelerswhile climbing this famous mountain was supposed to be another important joint experience for them. Before completed demanding high mountain expeditions in Nepal, Canada, USA, Hawaii and New Zealand. However, despite their rich experience, it was again shown that the mountains can be unpredictable and this time it was not enough for them.
Friends of the young couple are devastated. “They went to the same gymnasium, they studied at the same university. They dated for seven years before they got married. They liked the mountains, especially Anička — she spent all her free time hiking in the mountains. This shouldn’t have happened, they had their lives ahead of them.” those closest to them said.
The helicopter crash happened on Wednesday, Christmas Day. All five people on board died – according to the Tanzania Times server two Czech tourists, a guide and a doctor from Tanzania and a pilot, a citizen of Zimbabwe. According to the server, the helicopter was on a rescue mission at the time of the accident.
The exact cause of the fall of the machine, which according to the Tanzanian air force occurred 4,700 meters above the Barafu high-altitude camp, was not immediately known until now. The details of the tragedy are under investigation. In June, the European Union put all Tanzanian airlines on the list of threatened companies after a series of incidents, writes AFP.
They said in their statement “lack of qualified personnel, inefficient processes for oversight of flight operations and airworthiness, and non-compliance with international safety standards”. In 2022, the plane also crashed into Lake Victoria and killed 19 people, the French agency recalls.
