Taiwan shaken by 7.0 magnitude earthquake

(Reuters) – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck an area about 32km from the coastal city of Yilan, in northeastern Taiwan, on Saturday night (local time), the island’s meteorological administration said.

The earthquake shook buildings in the capital Taipei ‌and was 73km deep, the agency added.

According to the National Fire Agency, an assessment of the damage is still being carried out.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

More than 100 people died in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016, and a magnitude 7.3 earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
