It is not enough to just heat wine or rum. Enhance winter classics and less traditional drinks with fragrant spices and fruits. It’s worth it.
Everything can be improved!
The season of welders, grog and punch is here. These delicacies can contain more or less alcohol according to taste and needs for warming, and they simply belong to winter. We can try the classics as well as interesting less traditional variants.
Spices and a pinch of something more interesting go well with these drinks, and you might even like the lesser-known white welder or punch. You can improve even a fairly ordinary grog.
Classic red welder
Svarák is a heart affair on winter evenings, fragrant and warm. It is perfect for those moments when you want to sit by the window and watch the snow fall. You can buy mixturefor the preparation of mulled wine or mix it yourself.
Recipe: red wine 750 ml, sugar 3 spoons, 1 cinnamon, 3 cloves, peel of 1 orange. Heat the wine with spices and sugar to about 75°C, but you should not boil it. Leave to infuse for 10 minutes, drain and serve.
Try an unconventional white welder
White welder is finer and clearly unusual. Although it can be prepared in the same way as red, it would certainly be a shame. It deserves to have its own recipe. When you taste it, it will certainly earn its place among Christmas drinks.
Recipe: white wine 750 ml, honey 2 spoons, slices of lemon and orange, a small pinch of cardamom. Heat the wine, add honey, lemon and orange, boil briefly just until hot, strain and serve.
Fruit punch with and without alcohol
Punch is definitely not one single type of drink. It is prepared cold for hot summer days and garden parties, as well as for warming up in winter. There are a number of local specialities, so you might come across a British punch or perhaps a Hawaiian punch. These are very different drinks. While sometimes cranberry juice and ginger lemonade play a role, other times it’s orange juice, rum and wine.
British Hot Punch Recipe: orange and lemon juice 250 ml, strong black tea 750 ml, dark rum 750 ml, red dry wine 750 ml, half a cup of sugar, chopped fresh fruit (cranberries and oranges) or dried. Stir, heat until the sugar dissolves. Pour into the bowl with the prepared fruit.
Punch is a fruit and drink game. A children’s punch can also look like this. You can find the video recipe on the YouTube channel Apetit.
You don’t have to be ashamed of this grog
Grog is simple, hot and perfect when you need a little heat or a lift. Improved version is for those who want a drink with more depth. Can’t you smell the houseplant? Remember that rums are different!
Ordinary grog doesn’t have to be a hot quickie from a snack stand somewhere at the train station, but a pretty good drink that will make a winter sitting in the garden or a walk through the streets of the city more pleasant.
Recipe: rum 50 ml, hot water 150 ml, 1 spoon of sugar, a slice of lemon, a little orange liqueur. Pour hot water over rum, sugar and liqueur, stir, add lemon and serve hot.
