The new Toy Safety Regulation was by the European Parliament and the European Council. It will come into effect next Thursday, January 1, 2026, first as a monitoring system and in a period of adaptation – the rules themselves will only be applied on August 1, 2030.
The priority is protect as children of substances chemicals harmful substances present in toys and improve the implementation of European Union (EU) safety standards for toys.
Substances will be banned in toys as soon as they are identified as dangerous. This list of prohibited substances includes chemicals that interfere with hormones, damage the lungs, cause allergies skin or damage organs specific.
These new rules also cover per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) and the bisphenols. And they reinforce the existing ban on substances that can cause cancer, genetic damage or harm the reproduction (carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substances).
Digital tools will serve to reinforce the oversight. All toys sold in the European Union will have a digital product passport – with safety and compliance information, accessible to consumers online via a QR code or other means of data storage.
For toys sold online and imported into the EU, customs authorities will be able to check the product passport.
