The man knows the city from below. Cable routes from the 1970s, transformer stations that have become too small and gas pipes that will be history in a few years. When the managing director of Wiener Netze, Thomas Maderbacher, who is retiring at the end of the year, clears out his office in Vienna-Simmering these days, he will not leave behind a finished work, but rather a permanent construction site. Of course, that is in the nature of things. The new one, Thomas Angerer, is taking over a network that must remain stable and yet change radically at the same time.
