The final of the Apertura football tournament in Guatemala ended in confusion at the Manuel Felipe Carrera stadium, in the country’s capital, on Saturday (27).
Despite losing 1-0 to Municipal, Antigua won the title thanks to the advantage of the first game, on December 21st, when they won 2-0. The second duel, however, ended with serious incidents on the field after the invasion of fans and clashes between players.
So far, police authorities have not reported any people detained or possible injuries as a result of the riot.
At the end of the match, images from local television showed Municipal players chasing Antigua players and throwing objects at them, which quickly resulted in aggression between members of the two teams.
Other Municipal fans kicked the police officers, who after several minutes managed to contain the disturbances.
The president of the Antigua club, Manolo Callen, classified what happened at the end of the match as “unacceptable”.
“It’s unfortunate, we can’t talk about football unfortunately,” added Callen.
In the end, despite the tension, the Antigua team received the Guatemalan football champion trophy.
