Frosty and windy weather hit Slovakia: SHMÚ warns of danger in the mountains

Cold air has been flowing into Slovakia from the northwest to the north since Sunday morning, at the same time there is a strong pressure gradient in our area. “In several places, the weather is windy and, especially in the mountains, the weather is freezing, with the temperature well below zero,” the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) described the situation on the social network.

He cited Lomnický štít, where the temperature dropped to minus 17.5 degrees Celsius, or Chopok, where it was minus 12 degrees Celsius, as examples of severe frosts. “On Chopek, we observed a massive gale, with the wind rarely falling even in the middle areas. For example, in Telgárt, we recorded a strong wind, in impacts with a speed of over 80 km/h,” meteorologists said.

They warn that it will be windy all day on Sunday. After a temporary weakening, the wind in the mountains should strengthen again in the afternoon and evening. “It is not excluded that the wind speed corresponding to the strength of the hurricane will be reached for a short time on the ridges in high positions,” added SHMÚ on the social network.

In northern and central Slovakia, there is an increased warning against wind in the mountains throughout Sunday. The SHMÚ also issued a wind warning for the areas of eastern and southwestern Slovakia.
