New York airports have flights canceled after winter storm

A winter storm hit parts of the Great Lakes region and the Northeast of the United States on the night of Friday (26) to Saturday (27), causing traffic disruptions and leaving some areas without power.

At LaGuardia Airport on Saturday, flight information boards displayed red cancellation notices, while outdoor aprons were covered in white, with few planes visible amid the snow.

But travelers seemed patient, taking the delays and cancellations in stride.

Waiting at LaGuardia Airport, Felicia Reich said her flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was delayed by an hour.

“I expected this, I was prepared,” she said, bundled up in a heavy coat and an orange and yellow knitted hat.

“We were excited about snow because we had never seen it before,” Matthews said. “But it’s snowing on our last day, and now we’re behind schedule, it’s a little annoying. But we’re going to make the most of it.”

At Newark Airport, New Jersey, travelers bustled around in front of a large Christmas tree.

“I want to get out of the snow and go back to Las Vegas,” John Hildebrandt told the CNNWCBS. “I hope there is no delay.”

With ice weighing down trees and power lines in Michigan, more than 30,000 homes and businesses began Saturday (27) without power, according to the website poweroutage.us.

Snow accumulated on US streets

New York City workers prepared for days, spreading salt on streets and readying snow plows.

Just over 4 inches of snow fell in New York’s Central Park, the most since January 2022, about half the amount predicted by the National Weather Service before the storm.

On Saturday morning, snow blowers hummed and shovels cleared sidewalks in Westchester County, New York. Some parts of the county saw up to 6 inches of snow accumulate overnight.

The highest snow accumulation was recorded in Connecticut, with just over 20 centimeters, and more than 28 centimeters in Hartwick, New York.

However, winter weather conditions are not over in the region.

Another is expected to bring snow, wind and rain to the Midwest and Northeast starting this Sunday (28), according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service predicts blizzard conditions and snowfall of at least a foot in parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region, followed by extremely cold temperatures.

It also predicts freezing rain in the northern Appalachian Mountains next Monday (29).

Much of these areas can expect at least 2.5 millimeters of ice, with snow forecast in western Pennsylvania and New York state.
