Search for serial killer in Tocantins completes 60 hours without capture

Members of a criminal faction escaped from the Cariri Penal Unit by sawing bars; duo accumulates more than 100 years of conviction for homicides and other crimes

Security forces maintain a siege in the southern region of the state in an attempt to locate two inmates who escaped from the Cariri Penal Treatment Unit. As of this Sunday morning (28), the recapture operation has already lasted more than 60 hours without success in locating the criminals.

The evasion occurred during the night of last Thursday (25). According to information from the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the prisoners managed to saw through the cell bars and used an improvised rope with sheets to climb the fence and escape. The absence of inmates was only noticed by prison officers the morning of the following day.

High danger profile

The fugitives, identified as Renan Barros da Silva, aged 26, and Gildásio Silva Assunção, aged 47, are identified as members of the Primeiro Comando da Capital faction () and were serving their sentences in a closed regime.

Renan is considered a “serial killer” by authorities. He was sentenced in 2023 to a sentence of 72 years in prison for three double homicides and concealment of a corpse, crimes committed in Araguaína. The Public Ministry classified him as a person with a sadistic profile. Gildásio has four convictions in court, including murder, totaling 46 years in prison.

Internal investigation

According to the Secretariat of Citizenship and Justice (Seciju), at the time of the escape, the pair were in a separate cell due to disciplinary sanctions and had recently undergone a pavilion transfer.

The ministry announced the immediate opening of an administrative procedure to investigate the circumstances of what happened, with a focus on finding out how the inmates had access to the materials used to cut the bars. Security at the prison unit has been reinforced while searches continue.
