The storm, named Johannes in Sweden, affected a large area in the north of the country and also the western part of Finland. A man in his 60s who was working in the forest was hit by a falling tree in the Swedish town of Hofors on Saturday, police said on Sunday.. The person subsequently succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

Another man also died in hospital on Saturday from injuries caused by a falling tree near the Kungsberget ski resort in central Sweden. To the north of the center, the regional energy company Hemab reported that one of its employees was killed in an accident “in the field”. Swedish television SVT reported that a person was also hit by a falling tree.

Strong winds uprooted trees, disrupted traffic and caused widespread power outages in Sweden and Finland. In Finland, around 12:00 local time (11:00 CET) on Sunday, more than 85,000 households were still without electricity, while more than 180,000 households had initially experienced outages. Energy companies have warned that repairs could take up to several days. Meanwhile, Swedish news agency TT reported that at least 40,000 Swedish households were still without electricity on Sunday morning.
