Trump says Ukraine peace deal is in "final stages"

Trump says Ukraine will benefit from strong security guarantees if a peace plan is reached to end the war triggered almost four years ago by the invasion of the country by Russian troops.

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, said today that the peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine is in the final stages and that it could happen “very quickly”.

“We are in the final stages of discussion and we will see, [caso contrário a guerra] It’s going to go on for a long time and millions of more people are going to die,” Trump said, alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, before they entered for a meeting at Trump’s private vacation residence in Mar-a-Lago, in the US state of Florida.

Asked by journalists whether he believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was committed to peace, following the recent bombings over Kiev, Trump said he thought that Moscow wanted peace and stated that Ukraine has also attacked Russia.

Trump says Europeans “are very involved”

Trump assured that Ukraine will benefit from strong security guarantees if a peace plan is reached to end the war triggered almost four years ago by the invasion of the country by Russian troops.

“There will be security guarantees. They will be robust. And European countries are very involved”, assured the North American President when receiving his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, to discuss the plan. “I don’t have a deadline. Do you know what my deadline is? End the war,” he added.

Spoke to Putin today

Hours earlier, the American President and his Russian counterpart spoke on the phone about peace negotiations for Ukraine.

“I just had a good and very productive conversation with President Putin before the start of the meeting with President Zelensky”, announced the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on the social network Truth Social, which he owns.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the telephone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first since October 16.

In addition to the peace agreement for Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East was also a topic of conversation, Peskov said, without giving further details.

In the meeting with his North American counterpart, Zelensky seeks Donald Trump’s approval for a new version of the peace plan for Ukraine, presented by Washington almost a month ago.

This week, the Ukrainian President presented the new version of the document, reformulated after tough negotiations demanded by Kiev, which considered the first version too close to Russian demands.

The new document abandons two fundamental Kremlin demands: the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk region and a legally binding commitment from Ukraine not to join NATO.

Trump and Putin agreed to speak on the phone again after the meeting between the US President and Zelensky, said the Kremlin’s diplomatic adviser, Yuri Ushakov.
