The day before, the Ukrainian president wanted to point out this Saturday, one day before meeting with his American counterpart in Florida, its existing “red lines” in the draft peace plan, within the framework of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Upon his arrival in Canada, where he met with President Carney, Zelensky declared that tomorrow’s meeting is “very important.”
“We must work to minimize outstanding issues. Of course, today there are red lines for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” has declared before indicating that “there are compromise proposals” and that “all these issues are very sensitive”, including the territorial question or the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
The Ukrainian president has indicated that, in the event that the approaches to the plan are updated, before making a decision, he will communicate with the Ukrainian population because they are the ones “has the last word”, either through a referendum or “certain legislative changes”, as indicated through his profile on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Likewise, he has criticized that during the day, in which Russia has “massively attacked” Ukraine, alleging that this is Moscow’s “response” to the talks to “end the Russian war.”
In this context, he reiterated that kyiv’s “most important” request is that “security guarantees are solid” and that they are protected. He has also maintained that under “current conditions it will not be possible” to hold elections, as Washington demands due to pressure from the Kremlin.
“The skies must be safe and security must be guaranteed throughout our territory, at least during elections or a referendum”he stressed, while advocating that international observers be present “everywhere” in the territory, including that occupied by Russia.
Support from European leaders
Following these statements, Zelensky held a phone call with several European leaders, including the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; and the president of the European Council, Antonio Costa; who have supported him before the meeting in Florida.
“We applaud all efforts that lead to our common goal: a just and lasting peace that preserves sovereignty and strengthens the country’s security and defense capabilities, as an integral part of the security of our continent,” Von der Leyen declared.
The head of the Community Executive has assured that “in 2026, the European Commission will continue to pressure the Kremlin, maintain its support for Ukraine and work intensely to accompany it on its path towards EU accession.”
For his part, Costa has asserted that Brussels’ support “will not waver” and has defended “peace and reconstruction” in “times of war”, arguing that “a strong and prosperous Ukraine in the EU is a fundamental guarantee of security.” Furthermore, he has maintained that The twenty-seven continue to work in “close collaboration” with the Americans for “a solid and lasting peace.”
