Pivot of one and the president of , (-PB), the federal deputy (PP-SP) works behind the scenes to assume the presidency of the Public Security Commission and remain in evidence during the 2026 election year.
A Sheet found that the presidency of the commission is a priority for the PP, the party to which Derrite joined to contest the election for the Senate. In recent years, the collegiate was commanded by PL deputies, who used the position to pressure the Lula government on the issue of public security, an issue considered the PT member’s most fragile electorally.
Derrite, according to interlocutors, intends to use this space to reinforce his campaign for the Senate throughout the year, after leaving the Public Security Secretariat to resume his mandate in the Chamber. The commission deals with projects related to the area and has the power to summon the Minister of Justice and Public Security, to give explanations.
Derrite must face, however, resistance from his former party, the PL. In an internal agreement last year, the party decided that Paulo Bilynskyj (SP) would preside over the commission in 2025 and that Coronel Meira (PE) would be in charge in 2026. The party has preference for choosing the committees, as it is the largest bench in the Chamber. Meira did not return the report’s contact details for comment.
He no longer sees the situation as a problem, and understands that they will be discussed more outside the committee than in it. The president’s bets to show results in this area are the , which is in a special commission, and the Anti-Faction bill, debated directly in the plenary.
Among PT members, there are even those who believe that the presidency of the commission could be an asset to convince Motta not to appoint Derrite rapporteur for the anti-faction project again, now that the project has returned to the Chamber. Presiding over the committee that deals with the issue could act as a consolation prize, if the strategy works.
This was the crisis between the president of the Chamber and the government, with an exchange of public accusations and one from the PT, Lindbergh Farias (RJ).
The choice of Derrite as rapporteur, a role responsible for negotiating changes to the text, irritated Lula and the PT because he was Tarcísio’s then secretary, seen at the time as the PT’s likely opponent in the 2026 presidential election, before senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) launched his candidacy.
Derrite transformed the text into a new legal framework and renamed it the Legal Framework for Combating Organized Crime, with a series of new criminal offenses and an attempt to classify groups such as the PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital) as terrorists. The proposal was criticized by experts for weakening the federal government’s actions and disorganizing the role of the state police, and the parliamentarian ended up backing down.
The government’s in November, after six different versions in less than two weeks. There were 370 votes in favor and 110 against. Derrite made ultraviolent changes to the text, moving away from the Executive’s original proposal of simply updating current legislation.
That was one of the . Senator Alessandro Vieira (MDB-SE) returned to the idea of updating current legislation, taking advantage of part of the Chamber’s text and suggestions from senators. The proposal creates the category of “criminal factions” and specific rules for integration between federal and state forces, limits the possibilities of progression and toughens penalties.
As the project has been modified, the Chamber will now have to vote on whether to agree with the changes or reject them. The PT defends approving the Senate version, while the PL wants to return to Derrite’s text. Therefore, for 2026.
