Flamengo announced on Monday morning (29) the renewal of Filipe Luís’ contract. After a great start to his coaching career, with five titles in just over a year, the 40-year-old professional signed a commitment with the red-black club that is scheduled to end in December 2027.
It was not an easy negotiation. Valued for his multiple achievements – Copa do Brasil, Supercopa do Brasil, Campeonato Carioca, Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro –, he demanded a substantial salary increase. He also demanded a proportional adjustment to the members of his commission, which made the negotiations, which were finally concluded successfully, difficult.
“The positive outcome was only possible because there was, on both sides, a genuine desire to continue the project, in addition to the joint willingness to converge interests and build a balanced and sustainable agreement, which met the coach’s wishes, but also the club’s governance policies”, said the association’s executive director of football, José Boto.
Filipe Luís thus achieves a stability that had not been seen for some time at Flamengo. Before him, the last coach to start and end a calendar year in red and black was Vanderlei Luxemburgo, in 2011 – he was fired, however, right at the start of the 2012 season, in February.
The Santa Catarina native ended a successful playing career in 2023, wearing the red-black shirt. He then started working as the team’s coach, initially in the under-17 category, then in the under-20 category, with excellent results. In September 2024, with Tite’s dismissal, he gained a chance in the professional squad and needed just nine games to win his first title.
Applying tactical concepts he learned in Europe, as a left-back for Deportivo La Coruña, Atlético de Madrid and Chelsea, he quickly proved himself capable of dealing with Flamengo’s star-studded squad. He had public fights with attackers Gabigol and Pedro and emerged stronger from each of them.
In 2025, Filipe led the team in a great season, with titles in Brazil and South America and impressive results against European opponents. In the Club World Cup, the Rio club defeated Chelsea, who would go on to become champions, 3-1. In the Intercontinental Cup, they were only beaten by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties, after a 1-1 draw.
The performance valued the coach, who has already made clear his desire to work in Europe and has the influential Portuguese Jorge Mendes as his agent. At this moment, however, with a good salary adjustment, he found it interesting to remain on the team with the most expensive squad in Brazil before leaving for the Old Continent.
