Anyone who finds enough peace and quiet to watch birds outdoors at the beginning of the new year has a special chance from January 3rd to 6th, 2026. During this period, winter birds across Austria will be counted again for one hour. Since its beginnings in 2010, the participatory campaign has developed into the largest citizen science campaign in the country, the bird protection organization Birdlife Austria announced in a press release on Thursday. The “Hour of the Winter Birds” is taking place for the 17th time. In the last count, more than 27,000 people noted over 646,000 birds.
