Inmet issues warning for heat wave storms in the last days of 2025

The institute predicts that most of Brazil should experience rain during New Year’s Eve

With the arrival of a cold front, the heat is expected to lose intensity over the next few days.

The National Institute of Meteorology () reported this Monday (29) a forecast of heat waves and storms, especially for the Southeast and South regions, in the last days of the year.

The agency maintained a red alert, that is, of great danger to health, due to high temperatures until 6 pm on Tuesday (30), for six states: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul. In recent days, states in the Southeast and parts of Mato Grosso do Sul have been facing a heat wave due to a mass of hot air stationed throughout the region that prevents the arrival of cold fronts.

On Sunday (28), the capital São Paulo the highest for December since 1961. Some cities in the interior of São Paulo even exceeded 42 °C.

In the Central-West, the intense heat continues with maximum temperatures close to 39 °C in Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, accompanied by isolated showers of rain.

In the backlands and rural areas of several states in the Northeast region, the health risk is caused by low relative humidity, which, according to Inmet, can vary between 30% and 20%.

Storms

For the last days of the year, the tendency is for the with the arrival of a cold front with heavy rain, which should cause instability in several parts of the country.

The entire state of São Paulo, the south of Rio de Janeiro and the south/southwest of Minas Gerais are under a yellow storm warning until 10am on Tuesday. The volume of rain can vary up to 50 millimeters per day (mm/day), accompanied by intense winds (40-60 km/h) and hail. The risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling tree branches and flooding is low.

Intense rains will still hit large parts of the North region, from the north of Amapá, covering Amazonas, Pará, Maranhão and the entire state of Tocantins. The rainy area also includes the Federal District and Goiás and goes down to the Southwest of the country.

The storms should be more critical in Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to the southern coast of São Paulo and the southwest of Mato Grosso do Sul. For these locations, Inmet also issued an orange alert until 11:59 pm on Tuesday. In these locations, rainfall can reach 100 mm/day, with intense winds (60-100 km/h), and hail. The agency warns that there is a risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees and flooding.

New Year

In the Southeast, New Year’s Eve should be muggy, with forecasts of typical summer rain showers between the end of the afternoon and New Year’s Eve. There is a risk of isolated storms with lightning and gusts of wind in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

In the South, instability persists, especially in the northern half of Rio Grande do Sul and in Santa Catarina, where the year is expected to end with rain and the risk of storms. In the south of Rio Grande do Sul, the weather tends to be more stable.

In the North and Northeast, the summer pattern remains, with sun and heat. The northeastern coast is the region with the lowest risk of rain during the fireworks display.
