Syria and Türkiye together: a “bigger threat than Iran”

Turkish President Recep Erdogan

Turkey’s more aggressive behavior in the region “forced” Israel, Greece and Cyprus to sign a new joint action plan.

The president of Iran was clear this Saturday: his country is at war with the USA, Israel and Europe. It’s a “total war”, Masoud Pezeshkian.

But nearby, in Israel, another country is seen as an even greater threat than Iran.

Context: Last week, high-level military representatives from Israel, Greece and Cyprus signed a joint military cooperation action plan.

The new document was signed in the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia. According to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the trilateral alliance “does not seek conflict with anyone, but, on the contrary, strives for stability”.

But the same Netanyahu also said, at a summit: “To those who dream of rebuilding empires, I say: forget it. That won’t happen. Don’t even think about it.”

The current territories of Israel, Greece and Cyprus were part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 400 years.

There is another version of this agreement, which reinforces: there are political observers who look at this alliance as a reaction to Turkey’s increasingly aggressive behavior in the region.

Israel is in dispute with Greece and Cyprus over sovereign rights and economic zones in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Mass Israel’s main concern is Türkiye’s military presence in Syria.

Tensions grow between Türkiye and Israel. In Syria, the two countries are in direct confrontation.

Remember that, just over a year ago, the regime led by Bashar al-Assad. Since then, Turkey has been trying to gain political and military influence in Syria.

And, according to a commission from the Israeli Government, a Turkey-backed Syria could be a bigger threat than Iran.

On the Greek side, they look with concern at Turkish drones, fighters and aircraft that have repeatedly violated Greek airspace in recent weeks.

This new military cooperation agreement includes joint training for commando and Navy units, measures to combat drones and cooperation in electronic warfare.
