He is subsiding this Monday after causing the death of two people in Malaga and Granada last Sunday. This morning, the Local Police Headquarters of Íllora (Granada) confirmed the appearance of the young man “who disappeared yesterday.” The body was located around 1 in the morning by neighbors who were with a citizen security patrol in the search. The young man’s lifeless body was dragged by the current in the Arroyo de la Cañada de Íllora.
The Special Rescue and Mountain Intervention Group (Greim) of the Civil Guard Command of Granada moved to the location, approximately three kilometers downstream from the scene, to recover the body, which has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Granada for autopsy. The deceased young man, a native of Zujaira (Granada), was swept away by the current of the Cañada stream, in the municipality of Íllora, when he tried to cross it on a motorcycle with a friend. The companion managed to get to safety.
This morning, with natural light, the Civil Guard has resumed the search for the missing person in the Malaga town of Alhaurín el Grande. He was accompanied by another man, whose body was found on Sunday, at the time when trace of both was lost. Both men, aged 53 and 54, were traveling in the morning in a van that was swept away by the waters. The vehicle was located overturned in the Fahala River with significant damage but with no one inside. The tracking efforts made it possible to locate hours later the lifeless body of one of its occupants in the town of Malaga. The other was found this morning.
It is the most dramatic balance of torrential rains that will subside starting this Monday. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) foresees the departure of the current storm on the Peninsula in recent days, even with locally heavy rainfall in the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and the coasts of Almería and Murcia.
Last night, the danger of torrential rains and overflows was focused in the Valencian Community. There were some rescues, evictions, road and MetroValencia line cuts and airplane diversions, but no personal injuries have been reported. The rainfall and the increase in flows caused the ghosts to be revived in the area that suffered the fateful damage of October 29, 2024, which caused the death of 230 people. The Poyo ravine, among others, and the Magro river were filled with a lot of water, but no serious risk situations occurred. There were some occasional overflows of the Barxet ravines or the Vaca River, but without significant consequences. The Generalitat Emergency Center has reduced the alert level from red to yellow.
The rains, however, were torrential in the Valencian Community, and left more than 250 liters per square meter in the Ribera and Safor regions. In addition, there were copious hailstorms in towns like Torrent and a total of 1,513 lightning strikes fell in the Valencian territory until nine o’clock on Sunday night, an “absolutely extraordinary” figure, according to the Aemet.
The storm is expected to leave the peninsula this Monday and anticyclonic weather will arrive. On Tuesday, instability will still persist in Mediterranean regions, with cloudy or overcast skies and precipitation, occasionally with storms and hail, which are expected to be locally strong and persistent in regions of the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands and the coasts of Murcia and Almería, also possible in those of Catalonia, and will generally tend to cease and become increasingly clear.
Precipitation may be in the form of snow in the mountains of the extreme east and of Mallorca above 1400/1800 meters, and may drop locally to 1200 meters at first in southern Iberia.
No precipitation is expected in the rest of the Peninsula, although there is abundant low cloudiness with a general tendency to clear throughout the day. Only in the extreme west and Cantabrian Sea will slightly cloudy or clear skies predominate. In the Canary Islands, cloudy skies with the possibility of occasional showers on the mountainous islands, tending to clear.
