These Portuguese people will receive a check for €4,000 from the State: see if you are on the list and ask for the money from this day onwards

Homem a entregar dinheiro.

The year is coming to an end, but the State is preparing to once again deliver a check for 4,000 euros to thousands of Portuguese people who choose to buy an electric car. The measure is part of the new phase of incentives for sustainable mobility and is aimed mainly at individuals who comply with a set of well-defined rules.

At issue is direct financial support, granted through the Environmental Fund, which can be requested from the end of December and which has retroactive effect to January 1st of this year. This means that anyone who has already purchased an electric vehicle this year can still apply for the incentive.

More money and adjusted rules

According to the economics portal Doutor Finances, this new phase of support has a global allocation of 17.6 million euros, a value significantly higher than the previous stage. The amount results from the reallocation of funds that were not used in other public programs.

According to the same source, the model was adjusted to correct previously detected flaws, with fewer eligible categories and clearer rules. The objective remains focused on reducing emissions and accelerating the transition to less polluting forms of mobility.

Who is entitled to the 4,000 euro check

The website writes that the support of 4,000 euros is intended for individuals who purchase a 100% electric passenger car. The amount is allocated after validation of the application and acts as a direct reimbursement to the beneficiary.

In the case of entities, such as private social solidarity institutions, transport authorities or local authorities, the incentive increases to 5,000 euros. Still, the main focus of this phase continues to be supporting families.

The rules that cannot fail

The same source states that only new vehicles are eligible, with second-hand purchases automatically excluded. Furthermore, the obligation to scrap a combustion car that is more than 10 years old remains. Without proof of this slaughter, the application will not be accepted, even if all other criteria are met. This is one of the central conditions for accessing the 4,000 euro check.

Applications open on December 29, 2025 and run until February 12, 2026, and may close earlier if the available funds are exhausted. Applications are made exclusively through the Environmental Fund platform.

It also states that eligible cars cannot exceed 38,500 euros, with VAT and expenses included, a limit that rises to 55,000 euros for vehicles with more than five seats. After approval, the beneficiary has 90 days to submit all required documentation.
