On Tuesday (December 30), there is a threat of snow tongues and drifts in the districts in the north of Slovakia. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) has therefore issued a first-level warning, valid from midnight. The lowest wind warning in the mountains is also valid for some districts on Tuesday. SHMÚ informs about it on its website.
The warning against snow tongues and drifts applies to the districts of Ilava, Považská Bystrica, Púchov, Spišská Nová Ves, Bardejov, Kežmarok, Levoča, Poprad, Sabinov, Stará Ľubovňa and almost the entire Žilina region. “The formation of snow tongues is a potential hazard to traffic activities. The occurrence of snow tongues is common at a given time of year and area, but can cause minor damage.” meteorologists clarified.
Strong wind in the mountains can be in the districts of Banská Bystrica, Brezno, Gelnica, Košice-okolie, Rožňava, Spišská Nová Ves and almost the entire Prešov and Žilina regions. “On the mountains above the forest zone, the occurrence of wind is expected in some places, which will reach a speed of 110 to 135 kilometers per hour in gusts for a short time or an average speed of 70 to 85 kilometers per hour, which is up to a gale.” clarified SHMÚ. He claims that the predicted wind speed represents a potential danger for human activities, especially for hiking and mountain climbing.
