The British boxer Anthony Joshuaformer world heavyweight champion, was injured in a traffic accident in that killed two people this Monday (29), reported the press in the African country. “The vehicle carrying Anthony Joshua was involved in an accident, the circumstances of which are being investigated,” an Ogun State police spokesperson said in a statement, explaining that the boxer was traveling “sitting in the back seat of the vehicle.”

Ogun, located north of Nigeria’s economic capital, Lagos, receives many tourists and expatriates returning to the country at this time of year. Images posted online showed Joshua, a British citizen whose parents were born in Nigeria, shirtless, surrounded by what appeared to be fragments of broken glass from a window.

The police reported that the accident, in which two people who were in Joshua’s car died, occurred at around 11 am (local time, 7 am Brasília) on the highway that connects Lagos to the city of Ibadan. The Nigerian Road Safety Force said in a statement that the SUV in which Joshua was traveling “apparently was speeding, lost control while overtaking and collided with a truck that was parked off the road.”

A witness to the accident told Punch News magazine that the boxer was traveling in a convoy of two vehicles and was sitting behind the driver. “The passenger who was next to the driver and the person who was next to Joshua died instantly,” Adeniyi Orojo told Punch News. The police gave the same version, adding that the two victims were “passengers in the vehicle” and “lost their lives at the scene of the accident”.
