Deputy Krúpa warns against the disturbing image of Slovakia abroad: Dramatic reputational collapse

  • According to Krúp, Slovakia is perceived as an unreliable partner within the EU and NATO.
  • The deputy criticizes the threats and pro-Russian attitudes of the Slovak government.
  • Investors avoid Slovakia because of the unpredictability of political decisions.
  • The priority of the Slovak foreign policy should be to support Ukraine.

In 2025, the Slovak Republic’s reputation fell to an even deeper bottom than we feared. Within the EU and NATO, Slovakia is perceived as an unreliable partner promoting Russian interests in Europe. Relations with partners and allies deteriorated significantly. A member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic for the opposition SaS thinks so Juraj Krupa.

“The regular threats and labeling of our closest allies in Europe as warmongers on the one hand and the presentation of eastern dictatorships as models for the future of our republic make Slovakia not only an unreliable ally, but also a politically and economically unreliable partner for foreign investments. They bypass Slovakia, as investors have lost confidence, as well as the predictability of political developments in the Slovak Republic.” stated the deputy for TASR.

According to him, the relations of the Slovak Republic with its partners and allies in general deteriorated considerably this year as well. “In addition, the absence of bilateral visits to the Slovak Republic also proves this. Better relations with Vietnam or Laos will not compensate us for these deteriorated relations. On the contrary, they will continue to mean the deterioration of not only political, but also economic relations, which will also have an impact on the socioeconomic situation in Slovakia,” noted Krúpa.

According to him, only relations with Hungary can be described as good. “Relations with the government of Andrej Babiš in the Czech Republic are also expected to improve. This ends the calculation of the good relations of the Slovak Republic,” he added. According to the MP, the so-called sovereign policy on the four sides of the world turned out to be a “knee-jerk policy towards eastern dictatorial regimes”. As he pointed out, it was possible to attract the attention of the world and the world’s media to Slovakia.

“Our representatives also attracted attention by rejecting scientific facts related to vaccination, or by conspiracies about a flat earth, chemtrails, and a global conspiracy of so-called dark forces. They also managed to attract attention by scaring about the planned coup d’état against Slovakia by Georgian legions, or by accusing the United Kingdom of interfering in the election process in Slovakia. This government coalition also succeeded by constantly repeating Russian positions towards the invaded Ukraine to make Slovakia a pro-Russian, unreliable partner,” he added.

According to Krup, the biggest challenge in the coming year from the point of view of foreign policy will clearly be ending the war in Ukraine and strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities, as well as setting up the ability to respond adequately to hybrid attacks by Russia against Europe.

“Sovereign, pro-European Ukraine will be the key to the security of Slovakia and Europe, as well as close cooperation with Ukraine in strengthening Europe’s defense capabilities with Ukraine based on Ukraine’s experience,” he stated. According to him, the priorities for the Slovak foreign policy should be based on this.

As he stated, the consequence should be the strengthening of European unity in support of Ukraine or the involvement of Slovakia in the so-called coalition of the willing. “This would require a fundamental improvement of Slovakia’s bilateral relations with Poland, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. It would also require the launch of defense mechanisms against Russia’s aggressive hybrid activities in Slovakia. However, the realistic idea is the exact opposite, i.e. the support of centrifugal forces towards our closest partners and allies in Slovakia, as well as the continuation of gradual distancing from the European Union.” added the MP.
