With the turn of the year approaching, the CNN Brazil carried out a survey on the platform Google Trends to reveal the popular superstitions most searched for on the web, and which continue to cross generations.
Those that continue to resonate at this time involve specific habits, clothing and meals, such as, for example, wearing white clothes on New Year’s Eve, eating 12 grapes and jumping seven waves on the beach.
The terms searched for in the comparison survey were “white clothes for the new year”, “jumping seven waves”, “eating lentils”, “eating 12 grapes” and “money in your wallet”. The graph of the last 30 days shows that the movement of searches began on December 15th of this month.
The quest that has grown the most since then has been the superstition of “eating 12 grapes.” Legend has it that whoever eats twelve grapes at midnight, at the stroke of New Year’s Eve, will have twelve months of happiness and prosperity.
Next, the tradition of “eating lentils” was the most popular. Food is associated with prosperity and abundance. The superstition “money in your wallet” appears in third place in searches. The ritual of not starting the new year with an empty wallet is common to attract financial stability.

The platform also shows a graph of interest in superstitions according to the sub-regions of Brazil. In most states, such as Bahia, Paraíba, Maranhão, Goiás and Rio de Janeiro, the tradition of putting “cash in your wallet” was the most researched.
Although it is a common custom for those who pass by the beach, the habit of “jumping seven waves” has not been much researched. This can be explained by the fact that the interior of the country has considerably more cities compared to the country’s coastal strip.
