First female prime minister of Bangladesh: Khaleda Zia dies

Dhaka – Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday at the age of 80 after a long illness. This was announced by her party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Her death comes at a highly politically tense time for the South Asian country, shortly before parliamentary elections scheduled for February. The BNP is considered the favorite. Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, returned from exile last week and is considered the future head of government.
