Foreign tourists fill Porto hotels on New Year's Eve

The occupancy rate in some hotels in Porto is currently between 65% and 100% for New Year’s Eve and the main guests are Brazilians, Italians, North Americans, English, but also Portuguese and Spanish.

The Porto Palácio hotel, on Avenida da Boavista, next to Casa da Música and Rotunda da Boavista, is complete for New Year’s Eve.

Porto Palácio’s occupancy rate is 100%, a tradition that has been repeated from year to year, and the main customers come from Brazil, Spain and the United States of America (USA), but there are also Portuguese guests, says Rosário Neiva, head of reception at Porto Palácio.

At the Intercontinental Hotel, on Avenida dos Aliados, the hotel occupancy rate for New Year’s Eve is 96% and the majority of guests are English, who have been visiting the city for a few days, but there are also several national customers (20%), explains Diogo Vieira, receptionist.

Miguel Reis, assistant director of Vila Galé Porto, told Lusa that the occupancy rate of that hotel in the center of Porto is at 86% for New Year’s Eve, but he believes that reservations will continue to increase, with guests deciding at the last minute to spend New Year’s Eve in Porto.

The “majority of guests at Vila Galé Porto Centro are Brazilians and Italians”, added Miguel Reis.

At Vila Galé Porto Ribeira, in Cais das Pedras, overlooking the Douro River, the occupancy rate is 80% and the majority of guests are “Portuguese and Brazilian”, reveals Cláudia Madeira, head of reception.

At the Monumental hotel, located on Avenida dos Aliados, the booking rate is at 65% for New Year’s Eve, but, as has been tradition, the hotel has “last minute demand”, explained Patrícia Vieira, reservations supervisor.

The majority of guests are foreigners, from the USA, which is the most common market at that hotel, whose night in a room with an Aliados view is around “700 euros to 800 euros”, said Patrícia Vieira.

At the Hotel Inca, in the Cedofeita area, in downtown Porto, hotel occupancy is around 90% and the main guests are Portuguese, mostly coming from Lisbon and the Algarve, but there are also many guests from neighboring Spain, said Armanda Silva, head of reception.

A month ago, the hotel occupancy rate for the Porto and North of Portugal region was around 75% for the New Year, according to data from Turismo do Porto and North of Portugal ().

In an interview with Lusa, Luís Pedro Martins, president of TPNP, admitted, at the time, that expectations were “good” and that they followed the trend after the covid-19 pandemic.

The president of TPNP highlighted that the hotel occupancy rate for ‘New Year’s Eve’ was 75% in the North region across all sub-destinations, that is, Porto, Douro, Minho and Trás-os-Montes.

In terms of total overnight stays, between January and September, Porto and North registered 11.5 million overnight stays, which translated into a greater increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2024.

In terms of income, the region of Porto and the North of Portugal recorded “902 million euros” until September this year and the TPNP estimate is that the barrier of 1.1 billion euros in 2024 will be passed, as in November it registered an increase of 8.8% compared to the same period in 2024.
