Friedrich Merz after Tuesday’s talks on Ukraine: The peace process is moving forward

European and Canadian leaders are discussing transparency and cooperation to end the war in Ukraine, with Poland and the US emphasizing hope for peace.

Leaders from Europe and Canada discussed the war in Ukraine on Tuesday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on the X social network, according to which transparency is needed in the negotiations, including on the part of Russia. Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed hope that the war in Ukraine may end soon, reports TASR.

“We are moving the peace process forward. Transparency and honesty are now required from everyone – including Russia,” Merz wrote.

Peace is on the horizon

“Peace is on the horizon. There is no doubt that things have happened that give hope that this war can end, and quite quickly,” said Tusk.

AFP notes that the meeting is part of ongoing high-level diplomatic negotiations that have been taking place since November. Their goal is to end the almost four-year-long war in Ukraine, which began with the invasion of Russian troops in February 2022.

Negotiations with the USA

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with the US President’s special envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday, and the day before he met with US President Donald Trump in Florida. After the interview with Zelensky, he declared that the negotiations have progressed and only one or two unresolved issues remain.
