An estimated 30 million euros were stolen by as yet unknown criminals when they broke into the safe of a branch of a savings bank in the German city of Gelsenkirchen in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Thieves stole about 3,200 safe deposit boxes where more than 2,500 people had their valuables stored, TASR informs based on a report from the DPA agency.
According to the first findings, the perpetrators got to the safes through the parking garage. From there, after crossing several doors, they reached the archive premises, where they drilled through the wall with a special drill and reached the safe.
One of the biggest thefts in modern German history was discovered early Monday morning thanks to a triggered fire alarm. According to the newspaper Bild, each safety deposit box in the bank is generally insured for 10,300 euros.
For the second day in a row, angry clients gathered outside the branch of the savings bank in the Buer district, demanding information. They also chanted “We want in, we want in!”.
Tense situation in front of the bank
According to a DPA reporter, around 200 people gathered in front of the branch in the morning. Some of them broke into the vestibule of the savings bank, from where they were taken out by the policemen who were called.
They told those present outside the branch to go home and referred them to the savings bank’s website, where more information would be posted.
