Slovakia wrapped itself in a white blanket: SHMÚ issued warnings of gales and snow tongues!

The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) warns of a gale in the mountains and the formation of snow tongues, especially in central and eastern Slovakia. He therefore issued warnings of the first and second degree. SHMÚ informed about it on its website.

  • SHMÚ has issued warnings against gales and snow tongues in Slovakia.
  • In the mountains, they expect a strong gale with a wind speed of up to 160 km/h.
  • The warnings apply to areas of central and eastern Slovakia.
  • The occurrence of snow tongues can affect traffic and cause damage.
  • Meteorologists warn of increased danger for hiking and mountain climbing.

The warning against snow tongues is valid for several districts Banská Bystrica, Trenčín, Košice and Prešov regions with preliminary validity until Wednesday (December 31) in the morning. According to SHMÚ, the occurrence of snow tongues is common at this time of the year and in the area, but it can cause minor damage. “The formation of snow tongues is a potential hazard for traffic activities,” warned meteorologists.

Level 2 warnings against wind in the mountains apply in the districts of Tvrdošín, Poprad, Brezno, Liptovský Mikuláš, Ružomberok, Banská Bystrica and Kežmarok. In these locations, experts predict the occurrence of a strong to powerful gale, which can reach a short-term speed of 135 to 160 kilometers per hour (km/h) and an average speed of up to 105 km/h. “The expected wind speed is above average for the given time of year and area and represents an increased danger for human activities, especially for hiking and mountaineering,” they warned.

SHMÚ also warns against the wind in the Košice and Prešov regions, where locally on the mountains in positions above approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, the occurrence of wind is expected, which in gusts can reach a speed of 65 to 85 km/h and an average speed of around 50 km/h. “This wind speed represents a potential hazard for human activities,” meteorologists added.
