Like Frei Luís de Sousa, the majority of Russians were unable to elect the person who stood out throughout 2025.
It was close, but the majority of Russians, when it came to choosing the person of the year, didn’t choose just anyone.
At a Russian Field held in mid-December, with almost 2,000 people spread across Russia, the majority of Russians (35%) preferred do not mention any name.
Among the names that were actually mentioned, yes, the victory went to the President of Russia: Vladimir Putin was chosen by 33% of respondents.
The other candidates were far behind: the president of the USA, Donald Trump (4%), the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov (1%), and the Russian singer and actress, Larissa Dolina (1%).
And, equally with 1%, there was a name that may surprise: Volodymyr Zelenskyy, president of Ukraine.
With fewer votes, but also mentioned in this survey, were Elon Musk (businessman), Alla Pugacheva (singer), Mikhail Mishustin (prime minister), Andrei Belousov (deputy prime minister) and Alexander Ovechkin (ice hockey player).
There was also a considerable share (8%) of Russians who chose person of the year… themselves, or someone from family closest. Or some military man who is in Ukraine.
Looking at age groups, the oldest people (over 60 years old) voted – almost half – for Putin; but the youngest were more undecided and many said that the person of the year was their mother or partner, says .
