Tourists are attacked by stallholders in Porto de Galinhas

The confusion occurred due to a charge considered abusive by the victims for using tents and chairs on the sand strip

Attacked couple said they only did not suffer more serious consequences because of the intervention of lifeguards

A couple of tourists were attacked by stallholders on Saturday (27), in Porto de Galinhas, in Ipojuca, on the south coast of Pernambuco. The confusion was due to a charge considered abusive by the victims for using tents and chairs on the sand strip.

According to witness reports, the amount would be almost double what was initially agreed. The confusion would have evolved into physical attacks after one of the workers threw a chair.

Videos circulating on social media show tourists being surrounded and beaten by a group of stallholders as they tried to leave the beach. One of the men appears with his face covered in blood and visible injuries.

The victims stated that they only suffered more serious consequences because of the intervention of the lifeguards.

The attacked tourists stated that they intend to take legal action and criticized failures in health care in the region.

The city of Ipojuca and the government of Pernambuco said they are investigating the case.
