Fugitive from justice, president of IVL uses social media to rebut PGR

The president of IVL (Instituto Voto Legal), Carlos Rocha, convicted in the criminal action that investigated the attempted coup d’état, used social media to refute the accusation from the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) that led to his conviction.

Carlos Rocha responded to a post made by another person who identified him as a fugitive from justice. In the text he says: “The PGR made a very positive assessment of our technical report and my professional qualifications in the accusation against Nucleus 1 […]. In absolute contradiction, the same PGR stated exactly the opposite in its accusation against Nucleus 4”, he wrote on LinkedIn.

In the middle of the publication, he posted a video in which the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, talks about the report prepared by the IVL on electronic voting machines. At no point does he mention where he is and why he did not present himself to Justice to serve preventive detention ordered by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), on Saturday (27).

The arrest order was taken “ex officio”, that is, without provocation from the PGR (Attorney General’s Office) or the PF (Federal Police). The determination was intended to prevent further escapes of convicts.

The decision was made after the former general director of the PRF (Federal Highway Police) Silvinei Vasques was arrested in Paraguay in the early hours of Friday (26).

In addition to house arrest, precautionary measures were imposed on Carlos Rocha, such as a ban on using social media and contacting other people being investigated.

The president of the IVL was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison for participating in the coup plot. His role would have taken place in the production and dissemination of a false report about failures at the polls to justify contesting the electoral result.

He was only convicted of two of the five crimes highlighted by the PGR: armed criminal organization and attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law.
