New Year begins in Asia as Acre prepares to be the last to enter 2026

The New Year began to be celebrated in different parts of the world while Brazil — especially Acre — was still preparing for the arrival of 2026. At 12 pm Brasília time, East Asian countries such as Japan, South Korea e North Korea officially started the new calendar.

In South Korea, New Year’s Eve brought together thousands of people at Bosingak Pavilionin the heart of Alone. At midnight, a bronze bell was rung 33 times, in reference to the 33 heavens of Buddhist cosmology. The tradition symbolizes the expulsion of bad luck and the wish for peace, health and prosperity for the year ahead.

In North Korea, New Year’s Eve is usually marked by a fireworks display on the banks of the river. Rio Taedongwhich cuts through the center of Pyongyang. The celebrations follow a more controlled format, but they also symbolize renewal and hope.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, the turning point happens hours later. Acre, which is two hours shorter than Brasília, is traditionally the last Brazilian state to enter the new year, accompanying the symbolic end of the world change.

Thus, while the new year has already begun on the other side of the planet, people from Acre are still waiting for the local countdown, reinforcing the uniqueness of the state’s time zone and its special position on the global time map.
