Not all pyrotechnics are allowed: Find out when and where you can use them safely!

Firecrackers, flash firecrackers, firecracker batteries and other similar products, the main effect of which is noise, are prohibited for sale and use in Slovakia. These are pyrotechnic products of category F2 and F3. Tomáš Šmitala, the chairman of the Association of Pyrotechnics Sellers, informed about it.

  • Firecrackers and products whose main effect is noise are prohibited.
  • Fireworks can be sold from December 1st to December 31st.
  • The use of pyrotechnics is permitted on December 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on January 1.
  • Municipalities can prohibit the use of certain pyrotechnics on their territory.
  • Users of pyrotechnics are required to dispose of residual waste in a safe manner.

According to him, other fireworks can be sold from December 1 to 31 of the calendar year. Fireworks, Roman candles or rockets with colored light are allowed. “Firecrackers don’t have a bright green, red, blue explosion. The firecracker always explodes only in yellow. I would simply say that any blast that is disabled will immediately go off within one second. Whereas effects that are not disabled can burn for three to four seconds,” approached Šmital.

The time of use of other fireworks is on December 31 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight and on January 1 from midnight to 2:00 a.m. It can be used in places that are at least 250 meters from hospitals, treatment centers, hospices, nursing homes, social service facilities, quarantine stations, shelters and rescue centers for animals, veterinary clinics with a section for animal hospitalization or zoos or facilities for the rescue of protected animals.

At the same time, he pointed out that the municipality can limit or completely prohibit the use of pyrotechnic products of categories F2, F3, P1 and T1 on its territory or in parts of it for reasons of protection of public health and order.

After using pyrotechnics, according to Šmital, people are obliged to clean up the waste after themselves. He does not recommend cleaning it up right away, as the fireworks may smolder and ignite the container. “Some can be put in municipal waste, some in the collection yard. It depends on what product you have,” he pointed out.
