Former president of Brazil is serving a 27-year prison sentence for orchestrating an operation aimed at keeping him in power

The Federal Supreme Court of Brazil rejected a request for house arrest, for health reasons, from former president Jair Bolsonaro, arrested for an attempted coup d’état, according to a court decision published this Thursday.

Bolsonaro’s lawyers had presented on Wednesday the request of the former president, aged 70, hospitalized since December 24 in Brasília, and who underwent surgery for an inguinal hernia.

The former right-wing president (2019-2022) is serving a 27-year prison sentence for having orchestrated an operation aimed at keeping him in power, after his defeat against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the 2022 presidential elections.
