Bolsonaro leaves hospital after operation and returns to prison

The 70-year-old former Brazilian President has after-effects of an attack suffered in 2018, when it was stabbed in the abdomen during a rally in the presidential campaign. Since then, it has been subjected to several surgeries.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro left the hospital in Brasília this Thursday where he had been admitted for more than a week, after undergoing surgery for an inguinal hernia, to return to prison, an AFP journalist found.

Detained since November, Bolsonaro left the private hospital in his car, escorted by several police motorcycles, and must return to prison, where is serving a 27-year sentence.

On September 11th, the former President was condemned by the Brazilian Supreme Court for “leading” a conspiracy to try to “perpetuate themselves in power”after losing the 2022 presidential elections to the current President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Since the end of November, Bolsonaro has been serving his prison sentence at the headquarters of the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasília.

His lawyers requested several times that he be granted house arrest on a “humanitarian” basis due to his delicate state of healthbut, so far, the Supreme Court has denied all appeals.

On Wednesday, and following this latest surgical intervention, the lawyers of the former Brazilian President they again asked for house arrest for health reasons, but the Federal Supreme Court of Brazil again rejected the request.

“Contrary to what the defense claims, Jair Messias Bolsonaro’s health condition did not worsen”, considered judge Alexandre de Moraes in his decision.

Doctors say that, in addition to the unusual bouts of hiccupswhich led to this latest surgery, Bolsonaro suffers from severe sleep apnea, gastritis, esophagitis and other diseases.
