The number of unauthorized entries into Germany has halved over the past two years, according to official data published by the German border police on Thursday. TASR informs about it according to the report of the DPA agency.

The police recorded a total of 62,526 illegal entries into Germany in 2025. In 2024, it was 83,572, and in 2023, another 127,549, with some monthly figures exceeding 20,000. In December 2025, the number of illegal entries into German territory fell to just under 4,600.

As of mid-September 2024, police checks have been restored at all German borders in order to limit illegal border crossings by migrants. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stepped up border controls in May after Friedrich Merz took over as chancellor. The police are instructed to turn back asylum seekers as well, with the exception of vulnerable groups such as sick people or pregnant women.

The DPA notes that border checks are generally not allowed within the Schengen area of free movement, which includes most of the member states of the European Union, no exemptions may be granted in the event of security threats or other public crises.
