China wants to boost birth rate with tax on contraceptives


Hong Kong – China has abolished its three-decade tax exemption on contraceptives. The government wants to combat the falling birth rate in the country. According to a government announcement, the regular VAT rate of 13 percent will also apply to condoms and birth control pills from January 1st. The population of the world’s second-largest economy shrank for the third year in a row in 2024. Experts expect this trend to continue.
