Doctor Margarida Graça Santos talks to neurologist João Pedro Marto to help him recognize, prevent and act on one of the diseases that most affects the lives of the Portuguese.
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the main cause of death and disability in adults in Portugal. Although often associated with older people, it results from vascular risk factors that today increasingly affect young adults, such as hypertension and diabetes.
“Many of the cases in young people originate from diseases typical of old age, such as hypertension, diabetes or heart problems”explains João Pedro Marto .
The good news is that most cases can be avoided: prevention continues to be the first line of treatment and it is possible to both recover from the after-effects and prevent a stroke from happening.
