The judge has ordered provisional prison for the alleged patricide of Fuenmayor (La Rioja, 3,300 inhabitants) who is charged with the crime of homicide. The father, 54 years old, had a history of abuse and the Civil Guard attributes “continued violence” against the mother and her children, who feared for their lives.
The police action was launched around 5:30 p.m. on the last day of 2025 after the Civil Guard received a call alerting them that a minor had left his home, located at number 9 Veracruz Street, asking for help and an ambulance.
The agents located the dead man on the ground floor of the building, who had suffered multiple blows to the head, along with his wife and three children, two of them minors. Various objects were also found at the home that investigators are analyzing if they were used to cause his death.
According to the investigations, the man who died allegedly at the hands of his son had shown a “hostile, belligerent and aggressive attitude towards his partner, whom he attacked with an iron bar.” The eldest son intervened when he heard the screams and hits his mother was receiving. With the intention of protecting her, he picked up a knife and confronted his father, who was holding another knife in his hands. The escalation of violence ended when the son dealt his father a blow that caused his death. The investigation reveals that the son acted in this way to protect his family “out of fear for the safety of his mother and siblings.”
The Civil Guard maintains that this event has its origin in a case of “continued gender violence.” In fact, the victim had a history of abuse. His wife appeared in it until 2012, when the couple decided to resume living together and this order became inactive. “The woman allegedly suffered continuous abuse, although she did not dare to report it out of fear,” the investigation found.
The episodes of gender violence had recently resumed and had repercussions on the mother and children. “They feared for their own lives, generating a prolonged climate of fear, desperation and emotional instability in the home,” points out the Civil Guard.
