Last year, 418 people lost their lives in civil aviation accidents. This is according to data published on Friday by the German Aviation Association (BDL); in 2024, 334 deaths were recorded. TASR writes about it according to the DPA agency.
The most serious accident happened on June 12, 2025when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, India. A total of 260 people died – 241 on board the plane and 19 on the ground, with one passenger miraculously surviving. The investigation into the cause of the sudden loss of thrust in both engines is still ongoing.
The second deadliest accident happened in Russiawhere the An-24 plane crashed on July 24, 2025. While attempting to land, it crashed into the forest in thick fog, killing 48 people. BDL reminds that the number of accident victims in relation to the number of passengers has been steadily decreasing over the long term. The statistical probability of dying in a plane crash last year was one in 11,459,330. In the 1970s, the statistical risk was one in 264,000.
According to forecasts by the UN aviation organization ICAO, about 4.7 billion passengers will travel by air in 2025, more than ten times the number of 440 million in the 1970s. The statistics include accidents involving aircraft with a capacity of at least 14 seats and do not include accidents involving military aircraft.
