The ten best moments from Zohran Mamdani's first speech as mayor of New York: "I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as such"

He called me Héctor Juanatey, although as Xoan Tallón says, that doesn’t matter, everyone has a name. I like to write and tell things. At HuffPost I write about politics, and since politics is everything, telling you this is like saying everything and saying nothing.

What topics do I write about?

In HuffPost I write, as I already told you, about politics, which is all. If you would like to go into more detail, I will tell you: for the sake of pleasure, I like to write about everything that concerns me inside and outside the newsroom. In recent years, for example, I have been investigating the rise of the extreme right, a kind of invisible virus that grows more every day. A growth, however, that also has those responsible, and I like to pay attention to them, be it Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg or far-right influencers with more and more followers. But politics is also the cause of the disaffection that the ultras drink from. Hence, we must never forget fundamental issues such as housing; In short, the material conditions of citizenship. For that reason, too, and since the coverage I did for Público during the 15M in Puerta del Sol, in Madrid, I have focused a large part of my work on the different demands of social mobilization. Always be suspicious of those journalists who tend to overwhelm you with the refrain of objectivity. In the end, they only seek to discredit the very meaning of the profession.

My career

Despite all the warnings, since I decided to study journalism (Bachelor’s and Master’s in Investigative Journalism), with the exception of a break in which I worked in speech and political communication, I have been lucky enough to dedicate myself to writing. I started at La Voz de Galicia and, after leaving the land (Galicia) and moving to the capital in search of job opportunities, I went to Público, La Sexta, I was founding editor of eldiario.es, and I have written for a good number of media such as Praza.com, Luzes magazine, Playground Magazine, La Marea, Vanity Fair or CTXT. On one occasion I was in the Dakhla refugee camp, in the Sahara, and from there I brought back some brief notes that were published as a book, ‘Dajla. Notes from the Sahara’, edited by Praza. In another, I interviewed Txema Guijarro, one of the people who worked in the asylum of Julian Assange and Edward Snowden, and those dialogues were also transformed into a book, ‘The Analyst. An accidental spy in the Assange and Snowden cases’, by Libros del KO. In another period of time, I created, together with comedians Facu Díaz and Miguel Maldonado, a comedy program, La Tuerka News, because they are clear that without laughter we are going to hell.

How to contact me:

You can write to me at hjuanatey@huffpost.es. Insults are accepted, as long as they are funny. I’m on X/Twitter (), Bluesky, (), Instagram () and TikTok (@). The funny thing is that, deep down, I would like more than one of these platforms to disappear.
