7-month-old baby is hospitalized in serious condition after allegations of abuse and neglect

The family of three children reported to the press and protection agencies alleged cases of abuse, neglect and abandonment by their own mother, in the municipality of Xapuri, in the interior of Acre. The complaint gained repercussion after the hospitalization, in serious condition, of a 7-month-old baby.

According to reports made to Portal Acre, family members say that the problems have been ongoing since the birth of the youngest child and also affect the other two siblings, aged between 2 and 4 years old. The baby’s paternal aunt, Jaqueline Pereira, said that the family tried to contact the Guardianship Council on several occasions, alleging a lack of effective measures. “Since she was born, we have been fighting for something to be done, not only for her, but for the other children as well,” he said.

According to Jaqueline, the children were in a situation of neglect, with inadequate nutrition and lack of basic hygiene care. She also reported that the baby’s situation worsened after episodes that raised suspicions of violence, which motivated the family to seek medical attention. In one of the reports, Jaqueline said that the child had been burned with coffee and, even after initial care, returned home without adequate monitoring.

On December 31st, upon noticing injuries on the baby’s neck, family members decided to take her to the hospital in Xapuri. The child was then transferred to Rio Branco, where he remains hospitalized in a specialized unit. As informed by the aunt to Portal Acre, the baby was diagnosed with Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), in addition to showing severe malnutrition and metabolic disorders, requiring intensive care.

According to what was reported by the family, the child’s father did not live with the mother and was prevented from following the baby’s routine. After learning about his daughter’s health status, he began monitoring her medical treatment in Rio Branco.

Complaint to the Public Ministry

Given the seriousness of the situation, another family member, the paternal aunt of one of the children, contacted the Public Ministry of the State of Acre (MPAC) to formalize the complaint. In the document, she points out that the mother would not be guaranteeing minimum care conditions, such as food, hygiene and daily monitoring, leaving her children in a vulnerable situation.

The complainant also reported difficulties in contacting the children and stated that the paternal family had been prevented from helping or maintaining coexistence with them. According to her, the case was detailed to MPAC in an attempt to guarantee urgent protection measures.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office received the complaint and informed that it must request urgent guardianship and protective measures for the children, with analysis scheduled for next Wednesday (7).

Position of the Guardianship Council

In response to Portal Acre, the Xapuri Child Protection Council reported that it had already received previous communications about the situation, but that, during the visits made, the mother was with the children at home. In the specific case of the 7-month-old baby, the agency confirmed that it was contacted after hospitalization.

According to the Council, measures are already underway. Among them, the guidance for the father not to return the child to the mother and to prioritize health treatment, with referral to Rio Branco. The collegiate also informed that it will forward a Notice of Fact to the Public Ministry on Monday (5), so that the body can evaluate and decide on the appropriate measures.
