Leaders of eight released a joint note condemning the coup and interference against the country and defending the country’s sovereignty,
“We strongly and unequivocally condemn the US attack on Venezuela. Imperialism is acting to regain control over Latin America, appropriate Venezuelan oil and weaken the BRICS”, says the note, signed by representatives of CUT, Força Sindical, UGT, CTB, CSB, Nova, Intersindical and Pública.
According to them, the allegation that Maduro is a dictator and that it is necessary to bring democracy to the country is just a pretext.
“It was never about democracy. The claim to combat drug trafficking is also nothing more than cynical hypocrisy. The coup is in the air — and more alive than ever”, they say.
They remember that attempts at regime change began during the period of Hugo Chávez, Maduro’s predecessor and godfather.
“The siege on Venezuela has been built for decades, since Hugo Chávez fought to implement an independent and sovereign development project in the country, something that the United States never accepted”, declare the unionists.
They also call Donald Trump’s extremist government “extremist” and say that the intervention in Venezuela also represents a threat to Brazil, Latin America and the world.
“As history shows, the political, social and economic control exercised by the United States over the continent tends to deepen inequality, impose economic constraints, dismantle social policies and lead to periods of serious regression”, they state.
